Summer 2007

INTRODUCTION

Here’s the summer 2007 edition of Publitek Media News. I’ve rolled June, July and August into one because we’ve been busy – and work for our clients has to come first. However, we’ll be back on schedule with monthly issues from September. A lot’s happened in the industry in the last 3 months, so I’ve kept the stories short. I’ve also decided that media people are changing jobs so fast and so often that it’s better just to end each story with a web address so you can find the latest contact information from there. Hope you all had a great summer. Onto the news
..

Electronic Products claims big market share gains

Hearst’s Electronic Products is claiming big market share gains in the US. The publisher says the title is 30% up on ad pages in the first half of 2007 compared with 2006. It also claims that everyone else is way down and says that Electronic Design is the biggest market share loser. (A more flexible pricing policy may have something to do with the changes in the pagination numbers – Ed.)

Hearst offers custom views of market analysis reports for qualified advertisers

Hearst Electronics Group has announced that its Market Analysis is now available for electronic ‘custom views’ for qualified advertisers. “Many of our advertisers want to go beyond just overall circulation numbers to see how many copies are delivered to sites where EE’s are employed. We are strong believers in the value of an ad message through the intrusive yet amicable nature of a magazine that lands on the desk of a design engineer or in the personal Email inbox via digital delivery.,” says Todd Christenson, Publisher of Electronic Products magazine. The Market Analysis allows the tracking of US electronic engineering subscribers where they are geographically located (States and Regional Groups) - analyzed by the OEM End Products manufactured where they are employed. Information includes full reports covering the buying, recommending, and specifying job performances of the engineers, broken down into 33 specific electronic product categories. The analysis was based upon the total audited circulation of 123,248 EE subscribers working at 52,137 separate sites in the U.S.

CMP Technology Group makes 20% cut in headcount

CMP Technology Group made around 20% of its staff redundant in June, including prominent editors Brian Fuller, Richard Goering and Paul O’Shea. Its European editorial team was unaffected. At the same time, the print circulation of its flagship publication for the electronics industry, EE Times, was cut from 160,000 to 100,000. The headline on the publisher’s press release read “CMP Technology Strengthens Its Market-Leading Brands and Increases Focus on Next-Generation Media”. You can find the press release online at CMP and here’s what editorial director Richard Wallace told us: “We are doing in the U.S. what we pioneered here in Europe over the past year, creating an online-centric news team and copy/content flow that feeds the newspaper. In the U.S., and soon in Europe, you will see TechOnline take a higher, stronger profile in our online offering, alongside, and more tightly integrated with, EE Times online. Online is the future, but print is still very much in the picture. For all intents and purposes the U.S. and European staffs have been merged for more than a year. The print side of things is being resized to match the level of current and projected business growth, or lack thereof, in print. Print revenues in the U.S. are still under pressure, but growing in Europe. Online, likewise, has taken longer to develop in Europe than the U.S. but we expect growth there to accelerate as well. Going forward we will bring the EE Times and TechOnline brands, and products, closer together and offer a full spectrum of products and services to our readers and customers – in print, online, and events.”

CMP’s Patrick Flynn retires

Patrick Flynn, who has headed up European sales for CMP for many years, officially retired in June at the age of 65. However, he is staying on with the company in a part time capacity until December this year. Patrick spent most of his advertising sale career with IML in the UK, publishers of Electronic Product Design magazine, amongst others. Editor’s note: Patrick still has the enthusiasm and energy of a 21 year-old and those that know him will, I’m sure, miss his contribution to our industry. All at Publitek wish him a long and happy retirement.

United Business Media acquires Semiconductor Insights Inc. for $26 million

As part of a strategy to strengthen the CMP Technology portfolio, United Business Media has purchased Semiconductor Insights, a company that performs in-depth technical investigations of integrated circuits and electronic systems to analyze their design, technology, component sourcing, manufacturing process and intellectual property content. Steve Weitzner, CEO of CMP Technology said: “Semiconductor Insights, for example, already provides high value, exclusive editorial material for EE Times and EETimes.com such as the special “teardown” analysis of Sony’s Playstation 3 to coincide with its US launch. Semiconductor Insights’ data-based, workflow products will significantly augment - and are complementary to - the Electronics Group’s existing market-leading news and information products. The acquisition will enable us to deepen our relationships with our semiconductor and OEM customers by offering them a new set of workflow products that support their strategic product and intellectual property decision-making.”

Electronics Weekly (UK) claims official sponsor role at DSEi

Following our story back in May that CIE is the official sponsoring magazine of the DSEi show in London, Electronics Weekly has contacted us and said that: “DSEi organisers have confirmed that the only official media partner is Janes Information Group. Electronics Weekly is also publishing an A4 DSEi Supplement in association with the DSEi show and our sister company Reed Exhibitions. This will publish on August 29. Editorial will focus on a preview of electronic exhibitors at DSEi as well as additional articles on electronics in defence. As DSEi is a Reed event we are offering preferential rates to DSEi exhibitors for this special, which will also be distributed at the event.” CIE’s view differs a little, they say: “Perhaps Electronics Weekly has interpreted this wrongly. We are “AN Official Supporting Journal” not “THE Official Publication” - exactly as you wrote in Publitek Media News. CIE has the full backing of the DSEi organisers - and I am confident that we have the right to say that we are ‘AN Official Supporting Journal’ as we are officially affiliated with the show. We have Supporting Journal Status alongside Electronics Weekly, Electronics Sourcing, EM&P and their recent launch Aerospace Manufacturing, etc. In fact, there are a number of such ‘Supporting Journals’ from various industries - all of which I assume will have a similar signed contract to ours. For clarification, Janes is “THE Official Media Partner”. This is for obvious reasons as they cover all bases with Janes Defence Weekly, Janes International Defence Review and Janes Navy International. Flight International is also high on the list, covering the aerospace market.”

Electronic Product Design (UK) eLegacy awards finalists announced

From September 1st, the Electronic Product Design website will lists the finalists in its eLegacy awards event. Editor Caroline Hayes said: “The six categories are distinctive in the electronics industry and made our readers think ‘outside the box’ for entries. The judges were faced with an overwhelming task as the calibre of entries met our challenge of illustrating how effective the electronics industry is in contributing to communities and showing the way forward, with sound examples of corporate social responsibility. The judges were impressed with the level of entries as we waded through some amazing technology designs and some ‘good practice’ initiatives to make the workplace a better and more rewarding place to be for everyone.” The September issue of Electronic Product Design will carry the finalists in each category and invite the electronics industry to vote for the winners via the website. Voting closes midnight (GMT) Friday 19 October 2007. Winners will be announced at the e-Legacy Awards lunch on Thursday 1 November at the Tate Modern, London.
