October 2007
COMMENT
Last month I mentioned that EE Times’ US print circulation had fallen from 160,000 to 100,000. Publishing director, Paul Miller, was quick to get in touch and tell me that the print circulation was in fact 130,000. However, a quick look at the publication’s BPA statement for June 2007 showed a print circulation of 111,842. Further discussions with Paul revealed that he was including digital versions of the publication in his 130,000 figure. This is one more factor we all need to look at when assessing media. When you ask media reps about their print circulations, they routinely round the figure up to include digital editions – yet there has been no independent research to confirm how well these digital editions are read, compared with the traditional printed versions. CMP, Reed and Penton are heading down the digital delivery route at some speed, albeit using differing approaches to the medium. Sounds like an interesting research project for 2008.
Onto the news…….
Mike Green (EPN editor-in-chief) book publishing success
Mike Green, editor-in-chief) of EPN magazine, has successfully published his first book. “The Nearly Men: A Chronicle of Scientific Failure” is produced by reputable historical publishing house Tempus and examines some of the most important inventions and scientific discoveries of the last four hundred years, uncovering the stories of deceit and treachery behind each of them. It looks beyond what the common reference sources tell us and identifies the individuals who were truly responsible for such important technological advances as the microchip, the computer, the light bulb, the telephone, radio communication, the laws of planetary motion and even the theory of evolution. It’s available from Amazon and, as a Christmas gift for engineers, it takes some beating!
