May 2007
INTRODUCTION
A rather quiet month for news in May, I guess everyone’s recovering from the plethora of spring shows and events. No major media changes, but it’s interesting to see a UK publisher launching a UK-circulation electronics manufacturing magazine at a time when conventional wisdom tells us that everything is now made in China. Onto the news ...
EDN.com gets component search engine
Reed Business Information and SupplyFrame has announced the launch of an electronic component search engine within the EDN.com online publications. SupplyFrame is a search engine for information about electronic components. The partnership gives EDN.com readers the ability to search by part number to get information they need during the design process. SupplyFrame offers datasheets, pricing, availability, sources, trends, and electronic component cross reference data. Reed says that EDN.com and SupplyFrame will work together with component manufacturers and distributors to continually expand the coverage of parts available through this service and provide the most current, relevant information available. The service is available immediately on the Parts Search tab at www.edn.com.

EDN and TSMC co-sponsor EDA Consortium DAC kick-off reception
The EDA Consortium (EDAC) will host a DAC reception, co-sponsored by EDN Worldwide and the TSMC design ecosystem. Ron Wilson, executive editor EDN Magazine and Ed Sperling, editor-in-chief Electronic News will moderate the panel discussion. The evening will feature a head-to-head discussion between two industry panels — a customer panel and a vendor panel – and will reflect attendees’ input. One panel will consist of executives from companies designing advanced chips, and the other of technical executives from companies in the TSMC design ecosystem — providers of EDA design tools, libraries and IP, and design services. Entitled “Design Challenges: A Real-time Reality Check”, the panels will focus on the different categories of new chip design challenges to be encountered over the next two years. The event will be held on Sunday June 3, 2007, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the San Diego Marriott Hotel, Marina Ballroom, 333 West Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA. The reception will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the panel discussion at 5:45 p.m.

EPD (UK) e-Legacy awards for corporate responsibility
With plenty of awards events for technical innovation, the UK’s EPD magazine has come up with something a little different – a series of awards that look at corporate responsibility and what the electronics industry puts back into society (beyond cell phones and MP3 players). According to editor, Caroline Hayes, “The e-Legacy Award categories are in line with what companies are beginning to recognise as areas of opportunity and reflect the new-era ethos of giving back to the environment and community through the contribution of electronics.” An awards lunch, to be held in London on November 1, 2007 will recognize excellence in environmental design, medical advancement, investment in education, contribution to sustainability, investment in training and contribution to safety. Sponsors include Microsoft, Farnell in One, International Rectififer and Environwise. Nominate yourselves by Friday, June 29. The finalists will be announced in the September issue of Electronic Product Design and readers will vote on the winners - a truly egalitarian approach.

IIC China boosts pavilion by 230%
IIC-China 2008 is increasing the size of its Component Pavilion 230 percent to cater for China’s growing demand for components. “As systems level design becomes the pervading methodology in China, engineers are expanding their focus to include all elements that go into their designs - from IC processors through to component technologies,” says Mark Saunderson, President of Global Sources EBU. The Component Pavillion complements China Sourcing Fair: Electronics & Components, which the organiser claims will attract over 30,000 international buyers.

Electronic Design magazine ranks the “Top 100 Employers”
Penton Media’s Electronic Design has announced the publication of its first annual “Top 100 Employers in Electronic Design” special issue. Companies were chosen and ranked based on design influence on total spending; hiring patterns; patent and IP portfolios; and research and development budgets. The ranking methodology allowed for comparison of U.S. public companies of different sizes and provided a balance of financial, human resource, technology, stock market perception and engineering variables. The top 10 companies in the 2007 ranking were Apple, Seagate Technology, Applied Materials, Network Appliance, AT&T, Micron Technology, Honeywell International, Rockwell Collins, Emerson Electric and RF Micro Devices. “The Top 100 Employers continue to lead the way, based on their established brands and sales channels, the sheer number of designs by these companies and their substantial R&D budgets,” said Mark David, editor in chief of Electronic Design magazine. “In addition, we incorporated responses related to job satisfaction and advancement potential from the employee feedback portion of our 2006 Reader Profile Survey into our evaluation.”

CIE (UK) to produce DSEi Supplement 2007
Defence Systems and Equipment International (DSEi) is the world’s most prestigious defence exhibition, and is held in London every other year. Components in Electronics is an Official Supporting Journal of the DSEi show, and is publishing a supporting supplement to promote companies of interest to the military, aerospace and defence industries. In a letter to CIE, Lord Drayson, the Minister of State for Defence Equipment & Support, stated that the threshold contract value for which notices will be posted in the MOD’s Defence Contract Bulletin is about to be significantly reduced, putting the contracts advertised well within reach of many small to medium-sized companies. This is expected to open up opportunities for many more SMEs to engage with the MOD on a supplier basis. SMEs, and how they can supply to the MOD, will therefore be the focus of the editorial pieces. CIE’s DSEI supplement will the same format as the 2005 supplement: editorial, sponsored editorial and display advertising about companies that are exhibiting, as well as those that are not exhibiting but still wish to target a defenc audience. The supplement will be sent out with the August issue of CIE and will available at the show.

Advertising effectiveness research to be conducted in Elektronik and Elektronik Automotive
More than 200 ads per year in the titles “Elektronik” and “Elektronik automotive” are analysed with respect to their impact. The tools are the “Elektronik ad awareness surveys” and the “Elektronik eye tracking studies”. The next Elektronik advertising awareness study will be in Elektronik issue 15/2007 (ad closing date: July) and the results are supplied free of charge to all advertisers within this issue who book 1/3 page or more. Every participant receives not only a detailed overview of the recognition of the advertisement but an image analysis for the company and its advertised products. In issue 16/2007 of Elektronik (ad closing date: July 17) an exclusive eye tracking study takes place. The tracking of eye movements of design engineers and Elektronik readers shows the accessibility of advertising messages and information. Anyone booking a 1/2 page or more in Elektronik issue 16/2007 will receive the study’s report in the form of a DVD with recorded eye movements of potential customers.
