March 2006
Introduction
This is the fist time Publitek Media News has been late. But it’s deliberate. This morning (April 3) in London, CMP revealed details of its plans for EE Times in Europe (first exclusively revealed in last month’s issue of Publitek Media News). I though it worth waiting the weekend to be first to bring you the latest news on the launch, which is our lead story this month. It’s good news for Europeans that new print and online media investment by a major US publisher is taking place. While Europe has moved to 3rd place after the US and Asia in the eyes of many marketing executives in US electronics companies, the rate of electronic product innovation here has never been higher. CMP clearly recognises that Europe is going to remain a very important market for advertisers. After all, it’s tough to get components designed into a product after it has hit the Chinese production line........
EE Times Europe launch announced
CMP has announced details of EE Times Europe, an initiative that the publisher describes as ‘an integrated online and print publication’. Editorial director, Richard Wallace, said that the publisher will produce an online edition of EE Times Europe in English and local languages (German, French and Swedish) in May 2006 and this will be followed by a print edition in English on September 4, 2006. The tabloid EE Times Europe will have an initial circulation of 55,000 and will publish every 2 weeks. The initial target is to produce 48 page issues. Electronics Express Europe will become the product section of EE Times Europe. Following the launch, the EE Times brand will have a global print circulation of over 300,000, the largest in the electronics sector. Online page views for the EE Times family of web sites now exceeds 20 million, claims the publisher. A daily EE Times Europe e-newsletter will also appear in May. The initial BPA circulation audit for EE Times Europe will take place in September 2006 and will be based upon the existing Electronics Express Europe circulation, which is currently being updated. The editor-in-chief of EE Times Europe will be named during the summer. Richard claims that he is not trying to compete with local publications but that CMP will bring a global perspective to readers in Europe, plus local news from 8 or 9 editors based throughout Europe. The bulk of the EE Times Europe print circulation will be in Germany, the UK and France, although all European countries will be covered. Israel, Russia and Eastern Europe are seen as being of increasing importance and there are plans to develop dedicated regional online pages with contributions from local correspondents in these countries. As in the US, the print publication is designed to provide ‘in-depth analysis and perspective’ says CMP, while online editions will be the most important sources of news. A media pack, including an editorial features programme, is available from local CMP representatives.

Elektronik i Norden shows growth in subscribers
With many European publications having reduced their print circulations over the last few years, the pan-Nordic Elektronik i Norden (published in Swedish) is bucking the trend. The new 2005 figures from audit bureau Tidningsstatistik AB (ABC) shows that the publication has grown its circulation by 300 and now has 24,900 subscribers. The number of subscribers has grown every year from start in 1992, claims the publisher. The magazine continues to have two central editorial themes in each issue. Upcoming features are on opto electronics, test, microcontrollers, packaging, PLDs and design automation.

Half of Asian-based engineers will work with 32-bit processors this year, says EE Times Asia survey
Electronic Engineering Times-Asia has released the results of its sixth annual Embedded Systems Development Trends: Asia Survey, which shows that Asia-based engineers are working with more complex designs and components. Fifty-five percent of those surveyed expected to use 32-bit or higher microprocessors this year—up from 49 percent in 2005. Conducted by EE Times-Asia in collaboration with Gartner, Inc., the survey attracted 547 engineers from mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea, India and Singapore. As Asia moves up the silicon value chain, not only are engineers using more advanced components, project teams are also increasingly specialized. Thirty-nine percent of those surveyed primarily design software and firmware, up from 34 percent last year. Meanwhile the proportion of system designers has fallen to 39 percent, from 47 percent. The trend toward specialization is also accelerating in mainland China, where 44 percent of surveyed engineers currently focus on system design—compared to 57 percent last year. Forty-two percent of mainland respondents now mainly design software and firmware. Consistent with the 2005 survey, consumer electronics and communications are the main application segments for engineers’ designs. Industrial controls are also increasingly important, as more factory floor appliances are networked. 23% of respondents mainly work with consumer electronics, 21% work with communication products and 22% focus on industrial controls. The survey also provides forecasts on the number of design starts in 2006, and criteria used by engineers in selecting embedded systems, components and development tools. EE Times-Asia Executive Editor Vivek Nanda directed the survey in collaboration with Daya Nadamuni, Gartner’s Vice President-Research.
