===== Introduction ===== Even for those of us who left full-time education a long time ago, September always seems to have a 'back to school' feel about it. It's the time when we get down to serious business again after a period over the Summer when work slows down because of the holidays (or 'vacations' to our US readers, to whom 'holiday season' means something quite different). It also marks the start of the conference season, for the electronics industry just as much as for the political parties, and several upcoming events are featured in this issue of Publitek Media News. There is plenty of news this month too concerning China, the market towards which many of us are looking expectantly to provide our largest opportunity for growth over the next few years. Global Sources' forecasts for the consumer electronics sector would certainly seem to add further credibility to these expectations. Helen Duncan \\ Associate Director, Publitek ===== China’s consumer electronics production up 22%, says Global Sources ===== According to Global Sources' China Industry Outlook: Consumer Electronics Report, production of consumer electronics in mainland China will reach $67.3 billion in 2005, up 22% from 2004. The fastest growing products are expected to be air conditioners, up 33%, digital cameras, which will be up 29% to 33.5 million units, and MP3 players, which are expected to see a massive 61% rise to 16.5 million units. The report provides in-depth analysis of China's consumer electronics manufacturing industry and examines semiconductor demand and supply and design challenges. An increasing proportion of the market is for export: report publisher, Mark Saunderson says: "The industry is becoming increasingly crowded. To be more competitive, makers are shifting research and production towards more advanced products such as LCD and digital TVs, DVD recorders and eight-megapixel or higher digital cameras. In the first four months of 2005, exports of 21-inch and larger LCD TVs grew by 559 percent compared to the same period in 2004." ** CONTACTS** \\ Editorial \\ Vivek Nanda \\ Executive Editor \\ Tel: (63-2) 814-1408 \\ Email: USA \\ Craig Pitcher \\ Tel (1-650) 742-7900 extension 114 \\ Email: Europe \\ Patrick Flynn \\ Tel +44-207 921 8497 \\ Email: ===== EM China to cease publication, Semiconductor International China to expand ===== Industry sources report that International Data Group (IDG) and Reed Business Information plan to cease publication of EM China after the October issue. Instead they will be expanding Semiconductor International China - which was successfully spun off from EM China earlier this year - to include a monthly section on related news and technology developments for China's fast growing semiconductor packaging sector. Test & Measurement World China will also continue to be published as a stand-alone supplement six times a year throughout 2006, in association with Semiconductor International China, EDN China and Control Engineering China. **CONTACTS** \\ William Zhang, Publishing Director, ===== Elektronik Industrie introduces Application Guides ===== German magazine Elektronik Industrie is introducing in October a special issue called Application Guides that will direct design engineers to copies of companies’ application notes. For two years Elektronik Industrie has been including in each issue pages giving summaries of application notes, mainly provided by semiconductor companies. Each summary has a link to the complete application note, which can easily be downloaded from the magazine’s server, a service that has proved very popular. The new Application Guides will show summaries of the application notes with a link to the complete application note, which is stored on the Elektronik Industrie server. Companies wishing to appear in the guide need to transfer the PDFs of the application notes or product data, which is then uploaded onto the web server and given a unique URL. The editors then write the summaries based on the PDFs - a picture or block diagram of the product and the datasheet are also required. ** CONTACTS ** \\ Editorial: Siegfried Best, Editor, ===== eetasia.com sets new community milestone in August ===== In August, Electronic Engineering Times-Asia Online attracted over 4 million page views—a first for the network and a milestone in [[http://eetasia.com|eetasia.com]] community development.
